KazNU Discussed the Challenges of the Digital Era and Prospects for Cooperation with the University of Tokyo
91ý Kazakh National University hosted a meeting between Member of the Board – Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Alina Galeeva and Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo Kaori Hayashi. During the meeting, the parties discussed further development of cooperation in higher education and science, expansion of academic mobility programs, implementation of joint research projects, and international educational initiatives.
The meeting was attended by Director of the Department of International Cooperation Yesbol Omirzhanov, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism Aigerim Alzhanova, Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology Nurzada Beisen, Head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies of the Faculty of Oriental Studies Akerke Abagan, as well as representatives of the University of Tokyo delegation.
During the meeting, Alina Galeeva emphasized the importance of strengthening partnership relations between the two universities and highlighted the significant potential for joint initiatives in science, education, and academic exchange. In turn, Kaori Hayashi expressed interest in further expanding cooperation and developing international projects involving students and faculty members of both universities.
As part of the visit, Kaori Hayashi also delivered an open lecture at the Faculty of Journalism of KazNU on the topic: “The Rise of Fake News in the Digital Age: A Japanese Perspective.” The event brought together faculty members and students of the Faculty of Journalism, representatives of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of Far Eastern Studies, and students interested in modern media and digital communications.
The lecture attracted considerable interest, as the spread of misinformation remains one of the most pressing issues in the global media landscape. Kaori Hayashi spoke about the influence of digital platforms and social media on public opinion, the mechanisms behind the spread of fake news, and the approaches used in Japan to promote media literacy and responsible journalism.
Special attention was paid to the role of universities in developing critical thinking among young people. According to the speaker, modern education should not only provide professional knowledge but also equip students with analytical skills necessary for navigating today’s rapidly evolving digital environment.
Kaori Hayashi is a well-known researcher in the fields of media and journalism. She serves as Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo and is also a professor at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies. Her academic interests include journalism, media sociology, democracy, and the development of the information society.
