Sustainable Use of Plant Resources and the Development of Organic Agriculture
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 are aimed not only at improving human well-being but also at promoting the rational use of natural resources and environmental protection. Among these goals, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production holds particular significance. This goal focuses on the efficient use of natural resources, waste reduction, the promotion of recycling, support for environmentally friendly production, and the development of sustainable agriculture.
Plant resources are among the most valuable natural assets, ensuring global food security, serving as a source of medicinal raw materials, maintaining ecosystem stability, and contributing to climate change mitigation. Therefore, their scientifically based sustainable use, conservation, and restoration have become one of the key priorities of modern society.
In response to the importance of this issue, an educational and practical event dedicated to SDG 12, entitled "Sustainable Use of Plant Resources and the Development of Organic Agriculture," was organized for students of the 6B05102 – Biology educational program.
During the event, students gained comprehensive knowledge about the conservation and sustainable use of natural plant resources, the principles and characteristics of organic farming, and the importance of sustainable agriculture in ensuring environmental protection and long-term food security.
The objective of the event was to foster students' environmental awareness and culture by developing their understanding of the sustainable use of plant resources, the conservation of natural ecosystems, and the principles of organic agriculture, while highlighting the role of future biologists in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The main purpose of the event was to introduce students to the significance of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production) and to demonstrate the role of the sustainable use of plant resources and organic agriculture in promoting sustainable development. During the event, comprehensive attention was given to the rational use of natural resources, the principles of responsible production and consumption, waste reduction strategies, and the importance of applying environmentally friendly technologies. In addition, the students became familiar with the ecological, economic, and social importance of plant resources in nature and human life. The discussions covered the role of plants in maintaining ecosystem stability, improving soil fertility, regulating the atmospheric gas composition, and serving as sources of food, medicinal raw materials, and industrial resources. Particular attention was given to effective approaches for conserving natural plant resources, their scientifically based sustainable use, the recycling of plant waste, and the efficient management of water and land resources.
One of the key components of the event was the explanation of the fundamental principles of organic agriculture. The students expanded their knowledge of maintaining soil fertility through natural methods, using biological fertilizers, applying crop rotation systems, and the advantages of producing environmentally friendly agricultural products. Through practical examples, the contribution of organic farming to environmental protection, public health, and the sustainable development of agriculture was clearly demonstrated.
During the event, special attention was given to fostering students' environmental responsibility. Discussions focused on nature conservation, the responsible use of natural resources, waste reduction, and the development of environmental awareness in everyday life. Particular emphasis was placed on the responsibility of every individual for protecting the environment.
In addition, the relationship between the principles of sustainable development and the future professional activities of biology specialists was examined. The students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of conserving natural resources, protecting biodiversity, conducting environmental education activities, and applying the principles of sustainable development in practice. As a result, the event contributed to improving students' environmental literacy, fostering a responsible attitude toward nature, and enhancing their professional competencies (Figure 1).

Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) is an important global initiative aimed at promoting the efficient use of natural resources and fostering a culture of responsible consumption. The sustainable use of plant resources, the development of organic agriculture, waste reduction, and the conservation of natural ecosystems are among the key priorities for achieving this goal.
The event entitled "Sustainable Use of Plant Resources and the Development of Organic Agriculture," organized for students of the 6B05102 – Biology educational program, contributed to improving students' environmental literacy, fostering a culture of responsible attitudes toward nature, and enhancing their ability to apply the principles of sustainable development in their future professional activities. As future biologists, they can make a significant contribution to the country's environmental security and sustainable development through the conservation of natural resources, the protection of biodiversity, and the advancement of organic agriculture.
