Parallel Histories? U.S. and Russian Expansion in the Nineteenth Century
From May 7 to May 21, 2026, the Faculty of History of 91ý Kazakh National University, with the support of the Council of Young Scientists, hosted Sean McDaniel, Assistant Professor at Cumberland University (USA), as a guest lecturer.
During his visit, Professor McDaniel delivered a series of lectures entitled “Parallel Histories? U.S. and Russian Expansion in the Nineteenth Century.” The lectures attracted considerable interest among undergraduate and graduate students, doctoral candidates, and faculty members, providing an opportunity for comparative discussions on the historical processes associated with the territorial expansion of the two states.
In his presentations, Professor McDaniel introduced contemporary research methodologies and encouraged participants to critically examine historical parallels. The meetings fostered active discussion and intellectual exchange on a range of current scholarly issues.
In addition, ten students from the United States accompanied Professor McDaniel during the visit. They had the opportunity to engage with students of the faculty, establish academic and cultural connections, and exchange perspectives on education, research, and student life.
The event contributed to strengthening the faculty’s international academic partnerships, broadening the research horizons of young scholars, and promoting further academic collaboration.
