Research Without Borders: Experience Gained Through the "500 Scientists" Research Internship Program

The Department of Fundamental Medicine at 91ý Kazakh National University, held its regular Journal Club meeting. Yeszhanova G.A. delivered a scientific presentation on «Investigation of Cyanobacteria Strains from Rice Fields: Assessment of Toxic Potential», dedicated to studying cyanobacterial strains isolated from rice field ecosystems and evaluating their toxigenic properties.
The research was carried out under the «500 Scientists» scholarship program, supported by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan within the Bolashak program. The study was conducted at the Biological and Chemical Research Centre, University of Warsaw, Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hab. Iwona Jasser.
Cyanobacteria are among the most ancient photosynthesizing microorganisms, widely distributed in agricultural ecosystems. Certain strains are capable of producing cyanotoxins that pose a genuine threat to human health and water resource quality. The research by Yeszhanova G.A. contributes significantly to understanding these ecological and public health risks.
The work directly aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 — Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 15 — Life on Land, and SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals. The collaboration between KazNU and the University of Warsaw stands as a strong example of international scientific cooperation in service of the global sustainability agenda.
The presentation sparked an engaging discussion and reaffirmed that our researchers are conducting work relevant not only to national science, but to the global community. We are proud of our colleagues making an impact on the international stage!
