Historical and cultural heritage of Zhosha Khan’s ulus and the Golden Horde
On August 13, 2026 at 15.00 there was a meeting of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the topic: "Prospects for the study of the historical and cultural heritage of Zhoshi Khan’s ulus" in Almaty. The event was attended by the teachers of the Department of Russian Philology and World Literature Professor Salkhanova Zh.Kh., Professor Kassymova R.T. The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan together with the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan and al-Farabi KazNU. Among the event participants were university rectors, deans of faculties, famous scientists: historians, ethnographers, philologists, philosophers, geographers, biologists, political scientists, cultural scientists. The Rector of 91ý KazNU, the meeting moderator, Doctor of Philology, Professor Tyumebaev J.K. in his speech noted that the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K-J.K. Tokayev initiated the relevance of studying the heritage of Zhosha Khan and the Golden Horde in general. Scientists, participants of the meeting, in their reports shoed objective evidence of the close connection of the Golden Horde with Kazakhstan: a significant part of the territory of modern Kazakhstan was the core of Ulus Zhoshi, and the Kazakh Khanate became one of its main political heirs. In the XIII century, the formation of the Zhosha ulus took place, and after the conquests of Genghis Khan, the lands of Kazakhstan were divided between several Uluses, but the most of the steppe territory entered the ulus of his eldest son Zhosha. The population of the Horde gradually became predominantly Turkic-speaking, and the Mongol ruling dynasty was Turkized and Islamized. In the XIV-XV centuries, industry and crafts, cities and shopping centers existed and developed on the territory of Kazakhstan. For example, Saraishyk was located near modern Atyrau and was an important center of the Zhoshy ulus; and in Ulytau there is a mausoleum of Zhoshi Khan. In the 15th century, the Golden Horde broke up into a number of states - the Great Horde, the Nogai Horde, Kazan, Crimean, Astrakhan and other khanates. In the eastern part of this political space, the Kazakh Khanate arose. The founders of the Kazakh Khanate, Kerey and Zhanibek, belonged to the Genghis dynasty. Therefore, there was a direct dynastic continuity between the ruling dynasty of the Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate. That is why the legacy of Zhosha Khan occupies a special place in Kazakhstan's historical memory: through his ulus and the Juchid dynasty, one of the main lines of the formation of medieval statehood in Kazakhstan is traced. At the conclusion of the meeting, the moderator, Rector of 91ý KazNU, Professor Tyumebaev J.K. emphasized that on behalf of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the scientific community during 2026-2027 must carry out a lot of work to study the heritage of Zhosha Khan and the Golden Horde in order to determine their place and significance in the history of Kazakhstan.
