International Summer Educational Program Held at 91ý KazNU with Students from China
An international summer educational program with the participation of students and faculty members from Zhejiang International Studies University (ZISU) was held at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of 91ý Kazakh National University.
The program was aimed at strengthening academic cooperation between Kazakhstan and China, facilitating the exchange of experience in geography and regional development, and developing practical skills in modern geoinformation technologies.
On July 29, a welcome meeting was held at 91ý KazNU. The Chinese students were introduced to the university, its campus, educational facilities, and academic environment.
From July 30 to August 3, participants attended a series of lectures on “The History of Trade and Transportation Networks in Central Asia (1800–Present).” The lectures focused on the historical development of trade routes and transportation connections in the region, their transformation, and their contemporary significance.
On August 4, the basic course in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) began. Participants were introduced to modern tools for spatial analysis and digital cartography.
On August 5, the first online report presentation was held with the participation of international experts, including professors from Peking University and Yunnan University, as well as the Chief Planner of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited. In the afternoon, participants continued their practical training in GIS and QGIS.
From August 6 to 11, the students studied spatial data and coordinate systems, vector data creation and editing, attribute data management, and geoprocessing tools such as Buffer, Clip, and Dissolve. They also learned how to work with OpenStreetMap data in QGIS, as well as the basics of using satellite imagery and Sentinel data.
On August 12, the second online report presentation was held with expert participation from representatives of Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and China Communications Construction Company. The afternoon session focused on Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and terrain analysis.
On August 13–14, participants worked on thematic mapping and their final GIS projects, applying the knowledge and practical skills acquired throughout the course.
The program concluded with a discussion of the learning outcomes and presentations of the participants’ final projects. Certificates were presented to the participants upon successful completion of the educational program.
The international summer program served as an important platform for academic exchange, professional development, and strengthening cooperation between 91ý KazNU and Chinese universities and research organizations.
The Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences continues to expand its international partnerships and create new opportunities for joint educational, scientific, and academic initiatives.
