The modern 褋hair of the "History of Kazakhstan" was established on September 30, 1958 on the basis of the decree of the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR of May 21, 1958 on the formation of the Chair of History of the Kazakh SSR. A great contribution to the formation and development of the department was made by its first head - an outstanding historian, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Bekmakhanov Yermukhan Bekmakhanovich. He headed the chair in 1958-1966. In the following years 1967-1970, the chair was headed by associate professor Khakim Khabiyev, in 1971-1980 Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Saken Menzhazovich Kenzhebaev, since 1981, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Kadyr Zhamanbaevich Zhamanbaev, in 1987-2001 Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Dina Isabaevna Dulatova.

Acquisition of independence of our country and changes in socio-political life of a country have brought fundamental changes in historical science. In this regard, in 1992-1995, reorganizations carried out in the faculty structure, which resulted in the creation of two chairs: "Ancient and Medieval History of Kazakhstan" and "New and Contemporary History of Kazakhstan". The scientists of the chair of history of Kazakhstan faced the task of studying the historical problems of society and its evaluation. During this period, the chair of the department "Ancient and Medieval History of Kazakhstan" in 2001 was taken by doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Talas Omarbekovich Omarbekov. And, in 1997-2003, the department of the "New and Contemporary History of Kazakhstan" was headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Mambet Kulzhabayevich Koigeldiev. In 2003 the doctor of historical sciences, professor Kuanysh Suleimenovich Karazhan came to the head of a chair.

In 2011, in accordance with the Development Strategy of al-Farabi  KazNU carried out large-scale changes in all areas of activity. As a result, the two departments were merged into a single chair to the "History of Kazakhstan", in which Professor T. O. Omarbekov was the head. Since 2016, the department is headed by doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Academician of NAS RK Bereket Bakhytzhanovich Karibaev. 

The teaching staff of the chair holds lectures and conducts seminars on modern history of Kazakhstan in 1st  year students of all faculties of the University. The educational process of all teachers is organized in accordance with the working and model program. Teachers are constantly improving their work programs according to new requirements.

At the Faculty of History, as well as at other faculties where teachers conduct lessons, the educational process is conducted on the basis of standard programs. Therefore, the chair pays much attention to the preparation of new standard programs that meet modern requirements.

Teachers of the chair apply new methods in the educational process in checking the level of knowledge of students. In the educational process the teachers of the chair actively use the scientific results obtained in the course of their scientific work. The following general courses are taught in Kazakh and Russian languages:  History of Kazakhstan, Ancient history of Kazakhstan, History of Kazakhstan in ancient times and the Middle Ages,  Medieval history of Kazakhstan.

Students have  great opportunities to gain knowledge on the history of Kazakhstan, ethnic history, the history of the Kazakh people of the imperial period, and the study of the historical path of independent Kazakhstan in the native and world history. As we know, al- Farabi KazNU  was one of the first among the universities of Central Asia which joined to the Magna Charta of Universities and completely switched to the modern three-level system of training "Bachelor's, Master's, Doctoral PhD." The active involvement of bachelors and undergraduates in scientific work is a good foundation for admission to a doctoral PhD. The chair's master course students have an opportunity to deepen their theoretical knowledge and expand their research potential. Within the student exchange and academic mobility program, students, undergraduates and doctoral students of the department can be trained at foreign universities. Today, the chair closely cooperates with leading universities of Turkey, Japan, China, Germany, Poland, Russia, and others, which enables the students to improve their qualifications and receive additional education within the framework of the academic mobility program at these universities.

Nowadays, the chair contributes to the modern development processes in the sphere of science and higher education in Kazakhstan. The process of professional training of specialists is actively being established on the basis of effective integration of science and innovation activity, corresponding to the needs of the intellectual environment of modern society.

In 2011 according to the Development strategy TREASURY of al-Farabi the university has carried out large-scale changes of all fields of activity. As a result two departments have been united in uniform department "Stories of Kazakhstan" which was headed by professor T. O. Omarbekov. Since 2016 the doctor of historical sciences, professor, the corresponding member NAN RK Bereket Bakhytzhanovich Karibayev manages department. Now the faculty of department of history of Kazakhstan makes 31 state.

 The faculty of department gives lectures and gives seminar classes in modern history of Kazakhstan on 1 course of all faculties of University. Educational process of all teachers is organized in compliance to the working and standard program. Teachers constantly improve the working programs according to new requirements.

On department of history, and also at other faculties where teachers of department conduct occupations, educational process is carried out on the basis of standard programs. Therefore the department pays much attention to preparation of new standard programs which answer modern with requirements.

Teachers of department apply in educational process new techniques in check of level of knowledge of students. In educational process teachers of department actively use the scientific results received during the scientific work. The following general courses in the Kazakh and Russian languages are given: history of Kazakhstan, ancient history of Kazakhstan, history of Kazakhstan in the ancient time and Middle Ages, medieval history of Kazakhstan.

Students have ample opportunities to gain knowledge of history of the Kazakh statehood, ethnic history, history of the Kazakh people of the imperial period, of studying of a historical way of independent Kazakhstan in domestic and world science. As is well-known TREASURY of al-Farabi one of the first among higher education institutions of Central Asia has joined the Great Charter of universities and I have completely passed to modern three-stage system of training "bachelor degree-magistracy-doctoral studies of PhD". Active involvement of bachelors and undergraduates to scientific work, is the good base for receipt in PhD doctoral studies. Undergraduates of department have an opportunity to deepen the theoretical knowledge and to expand the research potential. Within student's exchange and the program of the academic mobility students, undergraduates and doctoral candidates of department can be trained at foreign universities. Today the department closely cooperates with the leading higher education institutions of the states of Turkey, Japan, China, Germany, Poland, Russia, etc. that gives the chance of the studying youth to improve skills and to get additional education within the program of the academic mobility at these universities.

Now the department makes the contribution to modern developments in the sphere of science and the higher education of Kazakhstan. The process of vocational training of experts on the basis of effective integration of science and innovative activity corresponding to requirements of the intellectual environment of modern society is actively adjusted.
