Large-Scale Nauryz Celebration Held at 91ý Kazakh National University
On April 11, 2026, 91ý Kazakh National University hosted a large-scale festive event dedicated to Nauryz — an ancient holiday symbolizing spring, renewal, and unity. The celebration took place in front of the Rectorate building and brought together around 700 students and university staff.
The program opened with the choreographic composition “Spring Radiance,” featuring 62 female students — 12 portraying swans and 50 representing flowers, gracefully conveying the beauty of nature’s awakening.
The audience was then presented with the vocal and choreographic performance “Nauryz Caravan,” involving more than 200 participants. The production featured images of batyrs (warriors), archers, and students in traditional costumes, as well as animals such as a camel, horses, Tazy dogs, and golden eagles. Traditional Kazakh rituals — Korisu, Alastau, and Bata Beru — were vividly demonstrated. Performers from the Alatau Traditional Theatre also took part in the production.
A congratulatory speech was delivered by the Chairman of the Board – Rector of the University, Zhanseit Tuymebayev. The Deputy Akim of Almaty, Abzal Nukenov, also extended his greetings to the participants.
The program continued with the composition “Nauryz-Duman,” which combined vocal, choreographic, and instrumental elements. A total of 70 participants were involved, including 10 vocalists who performed the title song. The performance also showcased national traditions such as shashu (ritual scattering of sweets), the offering of baursaks, and the distribution of Aport apples by children.
During the event, a medley of folk songs was performed with the accompaniment of the zhetygen, along with the traditional dance “Korzhyn.” The student folk instrument orchestra “Farabi Sazy” also performed, while finalists of the “Ult Azhary: Arular men Sultandar” contest presented traditional national attire.
In the poetry segment, 100 students recited in unison Abai Kunanbayev’s poem “Ғылым таппай мақтанба” (“Do Not Boast Without Knowledge”). This was followed by the song “Gul Almaty,” accompanied by a retro-style dance performance.
A particularly memorable moment was the final composition “Under One Shanyrak,” where students from 50 countries appeared on stage in national costumes and raised the shanyrak — a symbol of unity. Traditional dances from various cultures were performed, and 50 doves were released into the sky.
The celebration concluded with the song “I Love You, Kazakhstan.”
Following the main program, guests visited traditional yurts where university faculties showcased elements of national culture and heritage. A special interactive area titled “Youth Village” was also organized.
The day concluded with the “Ult Azhary: Arular men Sultandar” contest, aimed at promoting national culture and traditions.
The event became a vivid example of preserving cultural heritage and fostering spiritual and moral values among the younger generation.
